Meaning:- Scaligeria Meaning not known.
Napiformis (L) Having turnip-like roots.
General description:- Glabrous biennial 40-50 cm, with a tuberous root.
Stem:-
1) 40-50 cm, sparingly branched, erect, slender, terete.
Leaves:-
1) Basal, triangular in outline, 2- or 3-pinnate into rhombic-ovate, dentate segments.
2) Cauline, mostly reduced to sheaths.
Flowers:-
1) Inflorescence repeatedly branched.
2) Umbels, rather lax, with 6-15 slender rays, white
3) Bracts. absent.
a) Secondary bracts, linear. rather inconspicuous.
Fruit:-
1) 1.5 mm, broadly ovoid with cordate base.
Habitat:- Rocky slopes with dry open shrubby vegetation, scrubland vegetation,
gorges, road embankments, olive groves. 0-1400(-2000) m.
Distribution:- Throughout Greece except in the interior north. - Albania, Croatia, W
& S Anatolia, Cyprus, Syria, Palestine and Cyrenaica. Widespread an common on
Crete.

Meaning:- Halophila (Gr) Salt-loving
Resembling Scaligeria napiformis, but differering in the following characters:-
1) Stem, stout.
2) Leaves, fleshy.
3) Fruits, larger.(c. 2.5 mm).
Habitat:- Limestone cliffs and dry open shrubby vegetation, almost exclusively on
small islands, generally near the sea, 0-100 m.
Distribution:- Not recorded outside the Aegean area. Described from the island of
Dragonada off NE Crete. This species is restricted to small islands in the SE
Aegean area.
Flowering time:- April-May.
